Clouds of Color

Andy, 31 March 2005

The video card I bought for my new system was faulty, so it’s being shipped back to eVGA for a replacement. My web cam (and regular updates) will be back in a week. Sorry for the delay.

In other news, millions of butterflies are migrating across California right now and I walked to the bus today amongst veritable clouds of winged insects. The weather was perfect, too. It’s days like these that make me remember why I’m in San Diego.

Almost There

Andy, 18 March 2005

The light at the end of the tunnel is almost within arm’s reach. I had three final papers due Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Wednesday I was supposed to turn in a final project in Director (along with some late work) but managed to talk the deadline back to Sunday. I spent Thursday writing a grant proposal for Cal-IT2 (trying to get another summer fellowship), and today I am preparing for Liz and Dale’s wedding. Yesterday I worked for seven hours in the library and I’m doing the same today. Saturday and Sunday will be spent working in Director and Lingo while sobbing uncontrollably over the loss of my weekend. Somewhere in there I have to make up a bunch of dense reading on machine intelligence and write three or four pages of insightful commentary on it. Fuck.

Next week is my Spring Break, and I’m staying in San Diego, as I mentioned earlier. The first part of the week will be devoted to assembling my new desktop machine (so, so overdue) and on Wednesday Mazer will be arriving by plane for a few days of relaxation and debauchery. We’ll see if a Duolab redesign can defeat the temptation of 24-hour inebriation.

It’s really weird to me that my friends are getting married tomorrow. Just one more thing to make me feel old.

I Feel So Dirty

Andy, 6 March 2005

Before I started my day I pasted this delightful passage from Roast Beef’s blog into Trillian to use as an away message:

I started by heating up the pan and throwing a strip of turkey bacon in (again, less sodium) and two pieces of turkey salami (way less sodium). After I threw the second piece of salami in I did this huge double-take: I had thrown the salami in on either side of the bacon, since the bacon was laying across the middle of the pan, and it completely looked like cock and balls. Terrified, I quickly scooted the food around with a spoon, and it ended up looking like a smile. Then I realized that if anybody was watching, it would look like the food was creating a progression of ideas where (1) I like the shape of cock and balls, and then (2) I express my happiness about cock and balls by rearranging the meat to look like a smile.

Then, without thinking about it, I walked downstairs and had two kiwi fruit and a banana for breakfast. Sheesh. Achewood has taken root deep within my subconcious.

Bacteria are Awesome

Andy, 1 March 2005

It’s a slow day at work and I don’t want to end up doing something useful, so methinks that it is time for an update. Yes, it’s overdue. I wanted to post something last week because something momentous happened:

For the first time in a year and a half, I ate a cheeseburger.

I’ve been severely allergic to dairy (in all forms) and caffeine (which includes chocolate and apples) for nearly two years now, but I’ve been taking pills to repopulate my stomach and digestive tract with happy, helpful bacteria which allow us humans to digest cow’s milk and such. Most people take these little guys for granted, but ever since taking a week’s worth of Keflex (a strong antibiotic) freshman year, my stomach has been a lame duck. I have a long list of foods that I need to catch up with, but for the time being I am relegated to the smallest of baby steps. Still, I see a light at the end of the tunnel. Pizza, Thai iced tea, chocolate, green & yellow Thai curry, breakfast cereal, brownies, ice cream—I’ve got my eye on you.

I seriously cannot get enough of the Secret Machines right now. They’re so fucking good. I saw them a few days ago at Canes, you may have seen the photos (one of which was an “Editors’ Pick”) over at my moblog.

My birthday is right around the corner and I feel old. To distract myself, I’m rebuilding my desktop machine. I can’t wait to get back into 3D modeling (one of my courses next quarter) and I already have a pre-boner for Halflife 2. Yum.

Time to head to class.
